STANDING in front of a small, cramped and oppressively warm room in the attic of Counting House, was Singaporean comedian Sam See with a half-delighted, half-apologetic smile on his face as he warned people to grab drinks before they start. Kindly, he provided branded fans for his soon-to-be-sweating audience along with a condom that would establish the theme of the show. Both the small room and the fun giveaways helped break the ice, creating an immediate intimacy with audience members that would continue throughout the rest of their show.Despite his small stature, Sam packs a punch, probably one of the reasons the gay comedian was mistakenly asked by the Singapore government to do a series of panels on sex. As many people may or may not know, homosexuality (strictly between two men) is not yet legal in Singapore and talking about it openly in a government-run library is not without risk, but as Sam See flippantly put it, he is a comedian and no one to turn down a guaranteed payday. So, filled with fun facts and cardboard graphs about sex and dating, both straight and queer, and his own personal dating anecdotes, Sam See invited us to laugh and engage with him as we guessed the stats and cringed with him when he remembered the trials and tribulations of dating the delightfully named doctor, Blond John.At the beginning of the show, Sam saw my red press cord and told his audience that they had better laugh to make it look good, but the half-hearted threat was totally unnecessary. Sam See Government Approved Sex it’s a genuinely funny and endearing ensemble that had audience members practically roaring with laughter, myself included. I don’t think there’s a joke that hasn’t landed well. This show is part of the Free Fringe, so be sure to get a ticket and a generous tip. It is well deserved. Click Here For Review
