Anesti Danelis: This Show Will Change Your Life

Award-winning musical comedian and internet sensation, Anesti Danelis, returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to change your life with his critically acclaimed comedy concert.

Inspired by the deep well of vapid internet gurus, and aggressive self-help books yelling at you to “Get Your F**king Sh*t Together!!!” Anesti Danelis has decided that he will also add his voice to the oversaturated void of unsolicited advice. With catchy songs on guitar, piano, and violin you will be serenaded about: stealing from work, living at home, mermaids with unsolicited advice, the dangers of toying with a bisexual man’s heart, alternative medicines, red flags, blaming your terrible personality on your horoscope, and so much more.

Anesti’s musical comedy videos have taken the internet by storm, going consistently viral and raking up over 50 million views, listens, and remakes online, and over 170,000 followers. He has been seen on CBC, Global TV, Winnipeg Comedy Festival, Extra TV (Americal), RTL Explosiv (Germany) and has an hour long musical comedy special streaming worldwide on Next Up Comedy. His work has been featured on Funny or Die, VICE, People Magazine, Daily Mail and more.

REVIEW - This Show Will Change Your Life

THE Laughing Horse event within the Fringe is known for opening our eyes to some hidden jewels of comedy from all over the world.

Anesti Danelis, a Toronto-based comedian, was performing yesterday afternoon at the Hanover Tap as part of this festivity.

He promised a show that will change the life of every member of the audience. With this level of confidence, it was a must to see what this was all about.

The venue and set up were intimate and cosy – a guitar, keyboard and a mic with austere decoration that allowed no distraction.

From the first moment Anesti appeared, we were involved in everything.

In the initial 30 seconds he used members of the audience to tune his guitar and make sure he looked cute. Cheeky.

The theme of the show was set at the beginning – the wellness and self-help resources that are so prominent these days, designed to deal with well-known issues of modern life.

We were entertained with a 55 minute comedy concert that talked about anger management, sexual identity, office life, relationships and Anesti’s Greek roots.

More than watching a person singing in front of an audience, it felt like a conversation we had with a group of friends, with added music played by a strong instrumentalist.

There were profanities on stage, oh yes! But Anesti masterfully controls the thin line between hilarity and plain vulgar jokes.

Swearing had a certain intentional naivety that had people laughing non-stop.

The only detail I would change is the excessive closeness between the stage and the front rows that, at times, felt a little uncomfortable.

My personal favorite was the song In My Mind, that talks about the battles we face in our head with people that upset us, and the anger that encapsulates those moments.

However the audience’s number one had to be I F***ed Your Parents, where the comedian shares the time he ended a relationship due to his bisexuality and the consequences of that for his ex-partner.

We left unsure if this show changed our lifes permanently but it definitely changed the evening of everyone on the Hanover tap. We left a little bit happier and wanting for more. Click Here For Review

On the way to see his show, Anesti Danelis offered me a flyer. He seemed a gentle, unassuming, slightly shy man so you might be lulled into thinking his show would be the same. It isn’t. During the performance we get to know a lot about Danelis (a Canadian, Greek-lite, bisexual man, who also writes very funny songs). He gets to know a lot about the audience by gentle probing and questioning. Don’t be afraid though, he isn’t the sort of performer into hectoring you if you don’t want to take part.

We found out how long couples had been together, whether they had strayed and what they steal from work. He had to do a bit of on the spot couples counselling as two guys on the front row differed in their response to one of his questions. We also learned that some people are easily offended (a walk out at one of the more full-on songs)

The wickedly funny song that caused the offence (none taken by me and the rest of the audience) was about the revenge a bi man can take on the family of the guy who has dumped him in terms of ahem “getting close” to his mother, his sister, his father and other assorted relatives.

I particularly liked the number about really being upfront and vocal when people piss you off but in the performer’s case (like most of us) the angry voice and more outrageous imaginings are in his head.

Danelis is a really talented lyric writer – sharp, smart, funny and often unexpected and he has an engaging onstage presence. He is a decent musician too, whether on the guitar or keyboards, but it is the words that matter here.

I won’t tell you how this show will change your life. I will leave that up to Danelis, but it is well worth going along to find out. Click Here For Review
